ONE of the highest running races in the Peak District, the Chelmorton Chase, will be staged on Sunday September 7. Now in its 11th year and run at an altitude of 1,000 feet, around 100 runners will leave Chelmorton’s Main Street to race five miles around Five Wells,Taddington, The Rakes and over the prehistoric barrows of Chelmorton. Villagers will cheer them home and all will enjoy oat cakes and Hartington cheese on their return, courtesy of Lady Hollinsclough, at Primitive Hall. For more details visit www.primitivehall.demon.co.uk/chelmorton.

Badger and water vole updates

KEEP up to date with news of badger cubs rescued this year courtesy of the Mid-Derbyshire Badger Group. Pauline Kidner will give an illustrated talk called ‘Secret World - Wildlife Rescue’ at the Gothic Warehouse, Mill Lane, Cromford on September 17. In ‘Tails of the Riverbank’, at the same venue on October 15, Helen Perkins and Steve Docker will spotlight Derbyshire’s water vole recovery project. For more information, call 01773 852647.

Renishaw Vineyard tour

THE season of mellow fruitfulness is the perfect time to enjoy a tour of Renishaw Hall’s vineyard – especially when followed by a tasting and buffet in the Gallery Café on September 21. Renishaw’s vineyard was planted in 1972, and until 1986 was certified as the most northerly in the world. The September tour will enable visitors to see how the bottom leaves are removed from the vine to expose the ripening bunches to autumn sunshine, producing sugars and flavour before the grapes are picked by estate staff as late as possible in October. For more details, call 01246 432310.
