SNOW flurries and fleeting glimpses of sunshine signalled winter’s final fling but failed to halt a fine day’s point-topoint racing at Flagg on Easter Tuesday. Despite testing weather, several thousand racegoers turned out to enjoy the annual spectacle of riders and their mounts tackling both dry stone walls and brush fences at the meeting, staged by High Peak Hunt. Leading jockeys and their horses travelled from as far north as the Scottish Borders right down to Gloucestershire in the south to take part in the seven-race card. Elated clerk of the course Sue Rodman won the famous, first-onthe- card High Peak Hunt Members’ Race at the third time of asking on her horse Sharp Embrace, with whom she finished runner-up in both 2005 and 2006. Sue, who first won the race 15 years ago, also received the Jim Wood Memorial Cup for the best placed horse ridden by a woman. ‘It was a real thrill, and I’m very pleased for the horse, especially as he’s been second twice before,’ she said. The Centenary Plate for bestplaced non-thoroughbred horse was awarded to Maddy Moffett on Butlers Promise, while point-to-point chairman and veteran rider Anthony Hopkins netted both the Croxden Cup and Bob Graham Heavyweight Cup for achieving third place in the Members’ Race on Harvey. Meanwhile Mr and Mrs. Nick Fogg braved the elements in style to win the prize for Best Turned Out Racegoers, which was a weekend in the Cotswolds.
